The premier online marketplace that links doctors and nurses with healthcare work, Nomad Health, has recently launched its digital platform across the Midwest in the United States. This debut comes less than half a year after securing $12 million in Series B financing, and features tech that will help amend the painful shortages in several states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Growing clinician shortages have been a chronic problem for the U.S. healthcare system, and patient needs are especially dire in the U.S. Midwest. Across the country, the Association of American Medical Colleges projects that there will be a shortage of up to 105,000 doctors by 2030. The Midwest in particular has borne the brunt of the provider shortage given much of the region fits the profile of a ‘Rural America’ that providers have been reluctant to relocate to full-time, and as a result, these are often underserved markets.
On top of doctor and nursing shortages, the Midwest region is also suffering with the U.S. opioid epidemic. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded a 70% rise in the number of overdose cases at emergency departments in the Midwest from 2016 - 2017.
